This publication is produced on the occasion of the exhibition of the same title at National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts in 2010. The exhibition is an opening of dialogue, offering a place for public discussion of nearly 140 years of photography culture in Taiwan. Western photography has been predominant in Taiwan, a country subject to colonial rule. The exposure to second-hand culture inevitably casts political and environmental impacts on the nature of photography culture. Today, the nature of photography has shifted and it has become an emotional medium common to all of the world's people, as well as the commonly held property of all participants in art and culture. There is a need to salvage the body of nostalgic old local photographs before they disappear, images of the most elemental asset of local culture and shared collective memories. Therefore, this book hopes to establish the parameters of photographic culture and history in Taiwan.
